PHILOSOPHY | Striving to increase safety in our customers working environment

Modern Motor Trimmers have been supplying seats to various industries within WA for over 25 years now. From trucks to dozers, excavators, drills and mining trucks, we have learnt a thing or two over the years keeping our customers safe. From our perspective, this involves making sure we start of by supplying fit for purpose seats and then following up with regular service and reconditioning of existing seats to either get just a little more life out of them, or to make sure that they are in tip top working order.
Grant Van Elswyk, Sales Manager at Modern Motor Trimmers says, “We have customers from different areas, all working in different environments. So we've really got to take this into consideration when supplying seats. We have to look at the sites they are working at, and figure out the seat configuration to suit. It's not just a matter of pulling a seat out of a box and crossing your fingers.”
We have said this numerous times before, we consider ourselves to be problem solvers and this includes helping our customers to maintain a safe and efficient work environment for their equipment operators.

More Soundproofing

Not long ago we told you about the job we did making a Toro Groundsmaster 4700-D quieter in the cab.

It seems like word has got around, and now we have a number of customers asking the same question, "can you make this cab quieter?".

More Custom Products in 2019

Over the last few years we've made it a focus to use our expertise to make the operator experience that little bit more comfortable.

In this respect we have been able to customise a number of seats that are used daily within the mining, construction, transport and trucking industries.

Have a look at the Hitachi seat, specially developed for the Hitachi range of excavators.   As we had pointed out in earlier articles, our customisation provides the operator controls in a ‘seat mounted’ position. This capability helps increase operator productivity, in addition to mitigating fatigue and injury.

We have applied this same philosophy to the Komatsu seat, with the mounting of the Wheel Loader controls directly on the seat mount, the Rail Seat and also the Underground Seat.

We don't intend to stop there, and in 2019 we have plans to continue along the same line of providing solutions that will help our customers get their work done in a more efficient and safe manner.

Grant Van Elyswk, Sales Manager of Modern Motor Trimmers, says these new products are providing popular with customers.  ”These products have been beneficial to our customers with reports coming back saying  - you guys are on the right path, these custom seats are helping operator productivity."

With so many different equipment types operating within our industry, Grant has plans to increase the custom range next year.  "We've got a number of plans to continue our customisation programme in 2019 starting with a special seat for Dozers".

Don't use a BBQ plate to repair your seat.

We've recently seen a seat repair carried out using a 10mm BBQ plate welded to the top frame.
The heat from the welding caused the seat to distorted.

Why should I service my Seat Properly?

OHS Compliance
Modern Motor Trimmers work hard to ensure that our seats comply will all industry regulations.

Operating within the Mining and Construction industries demands high standards.  We currently work closely with some of the major mining companies in Western Australia such as BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, and dealers such as WesTrac, & Komatsu to ensure that our seats are of the very highest standard.

Efficiency and Comfort
Regular servicing of your ISRI seat will ensure you maintain the performance and comfort characteristics of the seat for the life of the product. Based on the highly successful NTS platform, ISRI construction seats raise the industry standard . Within this platform are vehicle air, compressor air and mechanical suspension seats, as well as static non-suspension seats and breathable, wear resistant textile covers.

Extend Life of Seat
Regular maintenance of your ISRI seat will allow you to not only extend the life of your seat, but to maximise levels of operator comfort throughout the duration of the seats commissioning. This translates to greater operator performance.

Protect your Vehicle

Protecting your vehicle from dirt, sand, mud, or whatever you're working in and around is something we all think about.

But those who work in and around their vehicle on a daily basis have even more reason to invest in a set of durable seats covers, floor mats, even a boot liner.

One of the main elements you are trying to protect your seats against is the sun. While impossible to completely block out, the sun's UV rays can cause damage to your seat in a short space of time.

Then in winter, well some types of seats are just cold, so a set of seat covers just makes things feel that little bit better.

Get Comfortable in your Truck

For our customers out there on long haul trucks, not only are the long hours a challenge to your back, but so to is all the “other stuff” you’ve got to do in a day's work. What about loading, stacking & handling freight, these are all activities that can have an impact on the body.
So what are some of the things you can do to reduce the risk of injury? Let's start in the cab. Most of you out there on the road are well aware that sitting in a truck isn’t like sitting in a chair. With the vibrations of the truck, bumps in the road, and wear and tear on the seat over the 1000’s of kms, poor posture can exacerbate any ill effects. You've heard us say this before, but setting up your seat is critical to making sure you get the best chance of getting home and feeling in reasonable condition.
Most of you out there are well versed in these tips, but they are worth repeating.Adjust the backrest so your arms are at a slight angle while you’re holding the steering wheel.
  • Adjust your seat so your feet can comfortably reach the accelerator pedal, brake, and clutch.
  • Your entire back should lean against the backrest.
  • Instrumentation should be easy to see.
  • You should be able to see all of your mirrors without slouching or twisting.
  • If during your journey you find you can't see your mirrors, you are probably slouching. Situp. Don't re-adjusting your mirrors.
  • Your thighs should be completely on the seat.
  • The back of your knee should be no more (or less) than an inch away from your seat cushion.
  • Change your position in the seat at least once or twice an hour. Small adjustments really do help.
  • Move your hand position frequently.
  • Don’t grip the steering wheel too hard for too long.
  • Check your seat suspension. You don’t want it to be too soft or too hard.

We’ve got a whole list of tips for setting up your suspension seat, so if you need any more information, please give us a call.

It’s also important to take care of yourself out of the truck too. Stretch slowly and carefully after you get out of the cab. Exercise to keep yourself in good shape. Watch your posture in and out of the truck. Do these things, and you’ll substantially decrease your chance of injury while on the job.

Not any ground breaking stuff in there, just the basics.

We look forward to seeing you out there, doing your stretching routine next to your truck, next time we’re passing by a truck stop.
